Hiya, can the captions be in lowercase or are they defaulted to all being in caps?

Yes, you can switch to lowercase. There is a button on the subtitle design bar on the main design tab. Looks something like this: Aa

Also in the subtitle editor there is is a menu at the top that says Subtitle Options and you can toggle the case there as well.
